A PROPOSED BILL TO CREATE MORE STATE CONSTUENCIES IN EDO STATE

By Amb. Justice Oyamienlen Godfrey

I wish to submit this proposal to my good people of Edo state that there is need to increase the numbers of constituencies in Edo State House Assembly to awaken the political participation and to bring about development in our state.

You will agree with me that some local governments with large landscape in the state receive less attention from government owing to the fact that the allocation to such local government may not be enough to meet the needs in the local government therefore the addition of constituency to such local government will in some extent attract the needed development in tense of infrastructures, social amenities and social welfare as part of the entitlement which other constituencies have been benefiting in the state. The numbers of state legislators as it is entrench in Chapter V Part II section 91 in the constitution of the federal republic of nigeria is between 24-40. Therefore Edo state is operating in minimum of 24 which had since contributed to the under development in our dear state.

A close look at some local government with one representative in the house for example Esan south East, esan Central even Egor, Ikpoba-Okha which are situated in the capital speak volume of under development in the 21st century. This truly shows that there is need for addiction of constituencies in edo state to attract development.

We can as well move from 24 to 34 members of Edo state House of Assembly as the case may be and see how rapid the development in these communities will be. The beauty of this proposed bill is that more edo people will be enlighten and politically incline to contribute immensely and bring about development and true representation in their various way. It will not longer be business as usual in the constituencies.

I'm calling on edo people, the traditional rulers, youths, civil societies and everyone who mean well for our dear state to support and add their voice to this bill for a better change in Edo state. Change is the only thing that is constant therefore we must pave way to bring the needed change in our dear state.

Long live Edo people!
Long live Edo State!!
Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
